Dog Supplements
Vitamins and supplements play an important role in your health, providing us with essential nutrients that we do not get enough of in our everyday diets. The same logic applies to our furry family members. A vitamin or supplement in your dog’s diet can greatly enhance an already healthy diet. Your pet’s diet is the foundation of their health and pets who receive adequate amounts of Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids, minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants with experience valuable health benefits.
By adding a vitamin or supplement to your dogs diet you can treat them for a specific condition or simply add the vitamins as part of their daily health maintenance.
If your dog has a specific condition, depending on what it is, chances are they could benefit from a specific vitamin or supplement. Is your breed of dog prone to joint problems? Does your dog have naturally dry or itchy skin? Factors such as age, breed, activity level and weight all play a role in choosing the right supplement. For large breed dogs or dogs that are susceptible or hip dysplasia, a supplement with glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin sulfate would be great as they both help build healthy, strong joints. If your dog has a skin issue, it could be there is not enough Omega 3,6,9 in their diet and a dose of salmon oil in their kibble would be highly beneficial. Another reason why your dog may benefit from a vitamin or supplement in their daily diet is if they have been on the same food for the majority of their life. For example, if they have been on a chicken based diet most of their lives and doing well on it, you do not need to switch their food, but simply add a vitamin with nutrients from other protein sources that they are not getting – such as vitamins in venison or duck. Supplements fill any “nutritional gaps” between the best dog food and what your dog would get in the wild.
Nobody wants to wrestle with their dog to administer vitamins or supplements so its good to know that these come in a variety of formats. Some come in a liquid form, that you measure and mix into your dog’s food. Most liquid supplements are naturally flavored so don’t worry about your dog turning their nose at it! Others come in a powder form that you sprinkle on your dog’s meal, once or twice daily. Dogs don’t seem to notice this addition to their meals and it’s a mess-free way to provide this healthy addition to their diet.
Feeding your dog a high quality food is the cornerstone of their health and by adding a vitamin or supplement will ensure your dog remains fully nourished, happy and healthy.
